A huge welcome back to Term 6!
I cannot quite believe how quickly we have reached the final half-term of the year! I hope that all of our families enjoyed a wonderfully sunny half-term together. Heading into our first week back, we've certainly hit the ground running and our week has been packed with fantastic Oakwood opportunities and achievements.
We were delighted to receive the results of the Trust Reading Competition from term 5 this week and I am incredibly proud to share that Oakwood were the overall winners! A wonderful achievement and a true reflection of our children’s determination and love of reading. 📚Our prize consists of £150 to invest towards new books for our school library; we're going to be working with our pupils to find out what books they feel would truly add excitement to our current selection! Our term 6 AR (Accelerated Reader) competition for KS2 has also just launched, with our goal this half-term focusing on improving our AR quiz accuracy. To earn points on the Aurora Trust table, children have to pass an AR quiz with greater than 80% accuracy (either a 4/5 or 8/10 score)! Come on Oakwood - we love a competition!
At the start of this week, we experienced slightly different weather (unlike our beautiful half-term) but the drizzle and wind didn't dampen our spirits of stop our Year 5 and 6 pupils taking to the roads for their Bikeability sessions. Claire and Julian, our instructors, praised the children not only for their strong road awareness and cycling proficiency but also for their excellent attitudes across the four-day course. We are very proud of how they represented our school.
A shout out to our Year 4 this week to, as they've been working incredibly hard completing their Multiplication Checks. They have been building towards this all year and have approached every session with determination and resilience - well done to each and every one of them. Year 4 have also started their swimming sessions and have already reported having a fantastic time! As headteacher of Oakwood, being part of our coastal town, I feel so passionately about our children learning how to swim and perform self-rescue techniques and I'm thrilled this remains a highlight of our PE curriculum for our children.
Our youngest learners made my week during assembly, where Reception and Key Stage 1 reflected on the question, “Why is it good to be good?” They thoughtfully linked their ideas to our school rules of Ready, Respectful, Safe, demonstrating such honesty and kindness - a real reminder of what makes our Oakwood community so special. 💛
Looking ahead, we are very excited for Year 6 Activity Week next week and cannot wait to hear all about their experiences. We also wish our Year 1 pupils the very best as they begin their Phonics Screening Check - and we're looking forward to a special visit from Fred the Frog for breakfast to help them start each day with a smile. 🐸
At Oakwood, we are proud of our school community and our uniform. We want all children to feel smart, confident and ready for their day – “look the part, feel the part.” As we look ahead to September, we would value your views on some of our uniform options. Thank you to everyone who completed the recent family survey. We truly value your feedback and look forward to using it to help our school continue to grow and improve. Thank you to everyone for your continued support and for taking the time to support our school development!
