  • Headteacher's Update: 19/06/26

We've been loving reading at Oakwood this week!

A huge thanks to all our nursery families for your support with our new pick up and drop off arrangements this week. It's meant that our new routines and curriculum provision are now underway and I could not be prouder of our nursery team and children for adapting so quickly. The children have embraced the changes brilliantly and it has been wonderful to see their confidence growing each day. I also had the pleasure of reading one of my all time favourite children's stories, Little Rabbit Foo Foo, during story time this week. It was fantastic to see how enthusiastically the children joined in with the actions - their energy and excitement made it a real highlight of my week!

It was also a pleasure to see our Daily Supported Reader groups in action this week as I shared Oakwood's work in this area with members of our Trust team. I am delighted to report that Daily Supported Reader was firing on all cylinders! Across the school, children were engaged, enthusiastic and making the most of every reading opportunity. A huge thank you must go to Miss Clark for her continued hard work in leading reading across our school. Alongside supporting the successful delivery of Daily Supported Reader, she has also been busy migrating and organising resources within our new Reading Hub area. We are excited to continue developing this space and look forward to making a few more environmental improvements over the coming weeks to create an inspiring area that truly puts reading at the heart of our school.

Well done to pupils in Years 1, 3, 4 and 5 who have approached our assessment period with maturity and determination this week. We know that the word "assessment" can sometimes sound daunting, but these checks are simply one of the ways we gather information about what children know, understand and can do. We'll be using the information to inform our end of year reports, which our teachers are busy writing, as well as giving us current data for our transition to new year groups.

A reminder that Friday is an INSET Day for children in Reception to Year 6. School will be closed to pupils in these year groups. Our Nursery will remain open as usual. We'll be using this day for staff to attend a Trust-wide Aurora Development Day, where colleagues from across our seven schools will come together to participate in a range of professional learning workshops. These collaborative opportunities help us continue refining our curriculum, strengthening our teaching practice and ensuring that children across all Aurora schools benefit.

Current forecasts suggest we are likely to experience very warm weather next week. To help keep children comfortable and safe, please remember to:

    • Send your child to school with a named water bottle.
    • Apply sun cream before school.
    • Provide a named sun hat or cap.

In school, we will continue to encourage regular hydration, make use of shaded areas, keep classrooms as cool as possible and adapt activities where necessary to ensure children remain safe and comfortable.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I hope you all enjoy the sunshine and we look forward to seeing the children for another successful week of learning.

    Warmest wishes,

    Mrs Morgan
