Head of School Update - Friday 25th February 2022
Fri 25 Feb 2022Welcome to this week's Weekly Update!
This week marks the start of Term 4. It was great to welcome all of the pupils back to school on Tuesday. I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable half term break. On Monday, all of the staff were in school, preparing for the new term, and continuing to develop an exciting, engaging and knowledge-rich curriculum.
As you will be aware, we were visited by Ofsted this week. HMI Shazia Akram joined us at Oakwood for a two-day monitoring visit. I was incredibly proud of all of the children who, as always, showed their very best effort in their classes and across the school. Thank you to all of you who contributed to the parent survey. I will update you, as soon as I am able to.
Thank you to those of you who joined us for the curriculum events held over from last term. It was great to welcome you in to school and I know the children were really proud to share their learning with you.
On Friday 4th March, we will be celebrating 'World Book Day' in school - this year celebrates the 25th Anniversary of World Book Day. All pupils are invited to come to school on this day, wearing something from their favourite book or as a book character, if they would like to.
We are also running a short story competition. The competition is open to all of our pupils and there is just one rule - no more than 500 words. We are encouraging as many pupils as possible to take part. Today you will have received a letter with further details about this year's celebrations.
Congratulations to our latest Word Millionaire. Bailey in Year 5 received his certificate, today, for the fantastic achievement of having read 1,000,000 words in this school year. Congratulations to Emilia in Year 6 who received her 2,000,000 words certificate.

Deputy Headteacher's Update - Friday 11th February 2022
Fri 11 Feb 2022Welcome to this week’s ‘Weekly Update’.
It has been a fantastic week of learning at Oakwood. Children have been demonstrating amazing politeness throughout the school by asking how people’s days have been; showing their manners when talking to people and holding doors open for each other and staff.
On Thursday 3rd we saw pupils come in to school with a variety of different number based costumes. The day was a huge success where children all showed great engagement with maths whilst raising awareness for the NSPCC and the work they do to support children and their families. And of course we cannot forget to mention the brilliant baking all children completed to support the bake sale at the end of the day. There was not a single cake left! We were able to raise a total of £282 for the NSPCC. Thank you all for your support and thank you to Mr Croft for organising the day for all the children.
This week in our Monday assembly, we looked at determination and the Winter Olympics that have commenced recently. Talking to pupils around the school, they have been sharing their amazement at some of the events they have seen from Beijing and the effort that the athletes have put in to getting to this world stage.
This last week we have seen some brilliant learning. Reception created some fantastic fruit kebabs and enjoyed a fire pit where they toasted some marshmallows. In Year 1, we saw some great space rockets made using the pupil’s own designs. Year 2 pupils have been creative with designing new unicorns and writing fact books about their new creatures.
In Key Stage 2, the amazing learning continues with brilliant discussion texts focusing on healthy eating. While in Year 4, pupils have being investigating torches and creating their own lights with electrical wires and bulbs. Children showed great determination to try to work out the answer. Our Year 5 pupils were able host a Mayan Museum with super unplanned competition for ‘who could create the most imaginative headdress’. Finally, in Year 6, pupils have been busy developing and constructing their own moon buggies while learning how to use saws safely.

In this week’s Celebration Assembly we awarded our certificates to our ‘Stars of the Week’ and ‘Stars of the Term’.

Y1 Nightingale – Grace S for Achievement - For fantastic achievement in Design Technology, designing and making a rocket and astronaut!
Y2 Brunel – Teddy C for Knowledge - For good knowledge on how to take care of an animal.
Y2 Seacole – Cheyenne L for Achievement - For settling well into a new school and always being kind and trying hard.
Y3 Ashe – Jett D for Determination - For showing determination to succeed in all areas of the curriculum.
Y3 Turing – Joey A for Determination - For having a fantastic week working independently, trying his best in every lesson and completing all work set.
Y4 Thunberg – Serenity D for Determination - For settling in to class and applying herself well. Coming across difficulty but showing good determination and 100% effort.
Y4 Logie-Baird – Eloise F-T for Determination - For huge improvement with her attitude towards learning. Coming in each morning with a ‘can-do’ approach to Year 4.
Y5 Hamilton – Aliyah J for Equality - For always being an exceptional role model and treating everyone with respect.
Y5 Pankhurst – Tarhyn W for Equality - For his determination to be better every day and achieve his targets.
Y6 Amundsen – Joao G for Determination - For being a hardworking and dedicated learner and always supporting others in their learning.
Y6 Parks – Manya D for Achievement - For having the most merits for being continuously helpful and well-behaved.
