  • Headteacher's Update - Friday 15th July 2022

    Fri 15 Jul 2022

Welcome to this week's Weekly Update!

It's a busy run-in towards the end of term, with our fantastic end of year events and performances - Sports Day, Transition Morning and 'Oakwood's Got Talent', just to name a few things this week...

Thank you to all of you who joined us for Sports Day on Tuesday. Typically, it either rains or it's hot and we had some very warm weather on the day! I was incredibly proud of all the pupils - they enjoyed their events, were determined, gave their best effort and supported each other, too. It was lovely to see. Having our families there also helped inspire the children, and it meant a lot to us all that you were able to attend for the first time in three years.

On Monday, our talented musicians performed in a very special assembly. Harvey, Brenin, Jessie and Chelsea performed to the whole school, to demonstrate what they have learned this year and to practice the skill of performing to an audience. We were very impressed with them all. Thank you to Paul from the Sussex Music School who helped support the children. If your child is interested in learning to play an instrument, a link can be found on our Facebook page.

Our pupils in Year 6 enjoyed their day out at Knockhatch today - their last as a pupil at Oakwood. We will share some photographs of the day, next week.

Well done to all of our certificate winners this week. Our Stars of the week are:

    Freddie in Reception

    Ronnie in Year 1

Aya and Matilda in Year 2

Leighton and Freddie in Year 3

Blake and Sammy-Jo in Year 4

Mason and Leah in Year 5

We'll announce our Year 6 winners next week!

Congratulations to Bethany V. in Year 4 who has become the latest Word Millionaire - an incredible 1,000,000 words read this school year!

Earlier today, we sent a letter regarding the weather warning expected for next week. The South Coast towns are forecasted to experience temperatures in excess of 30 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, so this has led us to changing the date of our Summer Concert. This will now take place on Wednesday 20th July, once the weather warning ends. I hope you understand the reasons for making this decision.

On Monday and Tuesday, pupils are welcome to wear their PE kit to school, should you wish for them to do so. We understand that in the warmer temperatures this may be more comfortable than the school uniform.

All pupils should come to school with a water bottle, sun-hat and sun-cream.

Unbelievable, we have just 4 days left of this school year. I'm really proud of our pupils - still giving their best every day!

    Have a great weekend!

  • Headteacher Update - Friday 8th July 2022

    Fri 08 Jul 2022

Welcome to this week's Weekly Update.

As always, we've had a fantastic week at Oakwood. Pupils have been giving their best effort and there have been some incredibly proud children across the school.

In Year 1 this week, the pupils have been developing their 'coding' skills in Computing, to develop these colourful bubbles. The children really impressed with their knowledge and skills.

Pupils in Year 4 have been learning about states of matter in Science. This week, they looked at how materials and their properties can change (or appear to change) when mixing corn-flour and water.

Our pupils in Year 6 have really enjoyed two successful days at their new secondary schools, as they prepare to get ready for Year 7. As I write, they are practising for their end of year Leavers Assembly, and parents of pupils in Year 6 are invited to join us on the last afternoon of term. This week, they have been writing their own 'twisted fairytales', with some plot twists that you maybe weren't expecting.

Here is this week's Hive update...

'In our 'Art Journaling' group this week we tried out different techniques with paint and used lots of unusual items to make marks with, including LEGO, twigs and bottle tops.

Our 'Boris the Bear' group have been thinking about all the different people that can help us when we are worried about something. We read 'The Huge Bag of Worries' together and played 'Clean the Wipe Board'.

The children are continuing to take good care of all our plants and the garden area and we have had some kind donations of tomato and lettuce plants (Thank you to Tililah and family). As well as all the usual jobs within a garden, we have been preparing the playground friendship benches ready for decorating and helping to clear another area within the school grounds.

Our 'Lego Club' have been working well together and we also have a 'Building Club' during one of our lunch club sessions where the children have made some brilliant models for our display shelf. It's been another brilliant week of learning in The Hive.'

    Mrs Snelgrove and Mrs Mathews

In our Celebration Assembly today we awarded our latest set of 'Stars of the Week'. This week's winners are:

    Ayaan A. in Reception

    Mila C-B. in Year 1

Henry D. and Kirsty M. in Year 2

Reggie H. and Lira W. in Year 3

Stanley S. and Bethany V. in Year 4

Jack S. and Leo B. in Year 5

Roman M. and Blake S. in Year 6

Well done to all of this week's certificate winners.

In our 100% Attendance Raffle, the number 211 was chosen at random. The lucky number belonged to Alfie S. in Stephenson Class. In this term's Attendance Challenges, YR Stephenson Class lead the way in the YR-3 challenge. Both Year 4 classes are tied at the top in the Y4-6 challenge.

We have a busy few days coming up. We hope you will be able to join us for Sports Day. This is taking place on Tuesday 12th July (Y3-6 in the morning, Nursery-Y2 in the afternoon). Please come and join us!

Pupils will be meeting their new teacher on Wednesday 13th July, when we will be holding our Transition Morning in school. The children have also been practising for the 'Oakwood's Got Talent' show, next week.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the school. I wish you all a great weekend!

  • Headteacher Update - Friday 1st July 2022

    Fri 01 Jul 2022

Welcome to this week's Weekly Update!

It has been 'Aspirations Week' at Oakwood this week. It's an opportunity for our pupils to meet the people in our community and for the chance to be inspired about the work that these brilliant people do. We are extremely grateful to all of our visitors who took time out of their busy schedules to come and visit us, all of whom have gone above and beyond to provide some incredible experiences to our pupils. We've learned a huge amount about the fantastic things that happen in our community.

Today, we welcomed Councilor Josh Babarinde to school. He spoke to all of the children about his life, his project work in the community, his role as a local councilor and the awarding of his OBE from the Queen. It was a privilege to see Josh's medal and to ask questions about the barriers and hurdles he has overcome. The children were really inspired and took time to talk to Josh at the end of the assembly.

On Monday, our pupils in Year 5 had a fantastic day out at Cuckmere Haven, learning about the incredible Geography of the local landscape. Yesterday, pupils in Reception enjoyed a day at the Eastbourne Miniature Railway. Two brilliant school trips to support our learning in class.

Well done to all of our certificate winners. This week's 'Star of the Week' winners are:

Emily in Reception; David in Year 1; Tegan and Sofia in Year 2; Ayman and Bradley in Year 3; Holly and Ryan M. in Year 4; Freddie-Joe and Leo in Year 5; Willow and Sabrina in Year 6.

Stephenson and Thunberg Classes are leading this term's Attendance Challenge. Will this still be the case next week?

Next week, we will share our class structure for the next academic year. We are busy in school getting ready for transition and planning the opportunities that will help all of our children across these last few weeks of term.

I hope you will be able to join us for Sports Day on Tuesday 12th July. Parents are welcome to attend. This is always a main event in the school calendar and we look forward to seeing as many of you as we can.

Please check this week's School Bulletin, with key dates and information about upcoming and recent events. We have also shared some photographs on our Facebook page.

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend!
