  • Head of School Update - Friday 29th April 2022

    Fri 29 Apr 2022

Welcome to this week’s ‘Weekly Update’.

This week, our first set of ‘Hive’ groups began, with cookery and gardening sessions – some delicious shortbread was made. The children have really enjoyed their learning this week and we are looking forward to some of our other groups starting next week. This week’s ‘Hive Snapshot’ can be found on the Bulletin, along with some photographs of the children backing and coming up with some design for a new gardening area. Thank you to Mrs Snelgrove and Mrs Mathews who have worked hard this week to arrange and lead the groups. I know they have had great fun doing so.

Throughout the school, there has been a real buzz for learning this week. In Year 1, pupils have been having fun through their Maths learning, exploring number facts and patterns, and making sure our numbers look perfect when we write them. Pupils in Year 2 have re-enacted a famous battle – The Battle of Hastings – to help with their knowledge of the key events and dates. The children recreated the famous scenes, learning about why the Normans and Saxons went in to battle. Pupils in Year 5 have been chief ‘taste-testers’ this week. As part of this term’s Design and Technology project, the pupils researched existing biscuit products to help them with their thoughts and ideas for their own designs. I think they enjoyed this! We’ve also made the most of this week’s dry weather to get out on to the school field at lunchtimes.

Some pictures from across the week feature at the bottom of this week’s update!

In this week’s Celebration Assembly we awarded our certificates to our Writing and Maths ‘Stars’ and our ‘Stars of the Week’. The full list of this week’s ‘Stars of the Week’ can be found on this week’s Bulletin.

Well done to all of our certificate winners this week and to Bella in Year 3, who had the lucky number drawn in this week's Attendance Raffle.

We also inducted our latest Accelerated Readeder 'Word Millionaires'. Well done to Brooke and Manya in Year 6. Bth children have read 1,000,000 words this school year and received their certificate and voucher in today's Celebration Assembly. Their certificates will join the 'Hall of Fame' in the library.

Today we said 'Goodbye' to Miss Jestico, who many of you will know from her time in the Nursery and Reception classes. Tia has been a great ambassador for Oakwood. We are sad to see her go and wish her all the best for the future.

Just a reminder that it is a Bank Holiday on Monday and the school will be closed. Have a great weekend and I’ll look forward to seeing all of the pupils on Tuesday!

  • Head of School Update - Friday 22nd April 2022

    Fri 22 Apr 2022

Welcome to Term 5! I hope you all had a fantastic Easter break and enjoyed some of the warmer weather. It was lovely to welcome all of the children back to school this week. Children were excited to come back to school and start their new learning journeys. We were also able to get out on to the field at lunchtime, too, which the children have loved - let's hope the dry weather continues for this.

I've been impressed with how well children have returned to school this week. I've seen some fantastic arithmetic and 'speedy Maths' from some of our Year 6 pupils, and they've been making some challenging nets in DT, too. In Year 5, the pupils have been putting their key historical events in to the correct chronological order, a key skill for any historian, and had great fun doing so. In Year 4, pupils have been practising their exchanging when adding four-digit numbers, using lots of resources to support them. We've certainly crammed a lot of learning into this three-day week.

Mr Hare started at Oakwood this week. Mr Hare will be teaching in Year 3 Turing Class for the remainder of the school year, whilst Miss Sheaf is on maternity leave. Mr Hare has really enjoyed getting to know the children this week and they have all helped to make him feel welcome. Miss Grimble will also be teaching some of our afternoon lessons in Key Stage 2. Welcome to them both!

Well done to all of this week's 'Stars of the Week'. The full list of this week's winners can be found on the Bulletin.

Finally, earlier today, you were sent a copy of our Ofsted report, following our inspection in February. I hope you will take some to read this. We were very pleased that the Ofsted inspectors recognised the great progress that we have made and we are looking forward to our full inspection, when Ofsted come and see us again soon. I'd like to thank you for your continued support of the school and all the staff.

    Have a great weekend!
