  • Headteacher's Update - Friday 30th September 2022

    Fri 30 Sep 2022

Welcome to this week's Weekly Update!

In today's Celebration Assembly, pupils in Year 6 Parks Class shared their learning with the whole of the school. In Art, they have been learning about Andy Warhole and some of his famous messages, and exploring some of their own ideas for screen printing, using inspiration from his work. We also heard some incredible suspense stories with some high-level vocabulary. Thank you to Year 6 Parks Class.

Year 5 Hamilton Class will be presenting some of their learning in next week's Friday assembly.

In Year 5, pupils have been learning about irreversible changes in Science. The children observed some fantastic reactions when mixing cola, mint sweets, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Look at our brilliant photos. In Year 4, the pupils went on an archaeological dig, using evidence to explain about the past. They discovered some Ancient Egyptian artefacts and used these to discuss their learning about civilization and leadership.

Well done to all of our certificate winners this week. Our full list of Stars of the Week can be found on the Bulletin - a copy is also available on our website. We also have our latest attendance updates too!

Please enjoy the photos from this week, including in The Hive.

    Have a great weekend!

  • Headteacher's Update - Friday 23rd September 2022

    Fri 23 Sep 2022

Welcome to this week's Weekly Update!

We held our Harvest Celebration Assembly at Oakwood today. Thank you to all of those parents and pupils who donated for our Harvest festival. Our Rainbow display looked superb, and we were able to handover all of the donations to the Eastbourne Foodbank. They were incredibly grateful for your generosity this year. We have added some photos to this update.

Well done to all of this week's certificate winners - our Mathematicians, Writers and Stars. The full list of this week's 'Stars of the Week' can be found on the school Bulletin (a copy is available on the school's website).

Pupils have shown great determination this week, really giving their best and overcoming adversity - a real determination in 'Being Better Every Day'. Teachers have been impressed with how focused pupils have been and the effort they have shown - nothing less than 100%.

Pupils in Year 1 have been using Numicon to add together two single digit numbers and write their number sentences in Maths. We've been practising our number formation, making sure their numbers are written correctly. In Year 2, the pupils have been looking at all of the ingredients that are need to make a good friend. They thought really carefully about their ideas. They have also been enjoying their lessons with Miss Fairhead. In Year 5, pupils have been learning how to separate materials, and have had lots of fun doing so. In Year 6, pupils have been learning about the creation story in RE, and enjoying some really good discussions. The children used drama to recreate the seven days of the creation story.

And a very big 'Well done' to our Reception pupils who have been brilliant for the whole of this week - they have made a very settled start.

In our Attendance Challenge, Stephenson Class (18 points) and Logie-Baird Class (20 points) are the early front-runners. Please see the Bulletin for a full attendance update.

Just a reminder that our 'Meet and Greet' is taking place on Tuesday (27th September), for pupils in Years 1 to 6. This is a chance for parents to see their child's classroom and meet their new teacher. We will start shortly after the end of the school day and finish around 4.00pm. I hope you will be able to join us.

    Have a great weekend!

  • Headteacher's Update - Friday 16th September 2022

    Fri 16 Sep 2022

Welcome to this week's Weekly Update...

I'd like to start with a warm welcome to all of our new pupils and staff. We've had some children join us in these first few days, who are settling in really well. Our new Reception pupils have settled in to their new routines and it's been a joy to see them exploring their learning environments. I have been very impressed and they are clearly enjoying being pupils in Reception at Oakwood. I'm looking forward to updating you with all of their learning this year. We've attached a couple of photographs from their Woodland Walk.

I've been very proud of our pupils who have made an excellent start to the new school year. Our pupils in Year 2 have been learning about the Great Fire of London and were inspired by the firepit, as a great hook, to get the children thinking about their learning, materials and historical events. In Year 6, we've been looking at components of circuits, introducing buzzers, switches, cells and bulbs. Attached are some photos from across the week.

I think it's fair to say that the whole school community is still coming to terms with the sad news of Queen Elizabeth's death last week. All of our pupils have been incredibly respectful, and shared their own thoughts about Queen Elizabeth II, the significance of her reign and the inspiration she was to our country.

The school will be closed to pupils and staff on Monday 19th September 2022 - the date of the state funeral.

Well done to all of our 'Stars of the Week'. The full list of this week's Stars can be found on the school Bulletin. Please follow this link to see an online copy:

In our Attendance Challenge, Year 1 Nightingale Class achieved a perfect attendance of 100% last week, and lead the way. Year 4 Logie-Baird Class also have 10 points. Well done to both classes. Congratulations to Logan W. in Year 4 who won the Attendance Raffle - 228 children in this week's 100% attendance draw!

Next week, we will be holding our Harvest Celebrations in school. Once again, we will be supporting the Eastbourne Foodbank, who provide fantastic support in the local community, and we are proud to be working with them again this year. We will be holding a special 'Rainbow Collection', and we are inviting pupils to bring in one item for the harvest festival, on a colour given to their class.

Children in Reception - something red or pink.

Children in Year 1 - something orange.

Children in Year 2 - something yellow.

Children in Year 3 - something green.

Children in Year 4 - something blue or purple.

Children in Year 5 - something white.

Children in Year 6 - something black

We hope your child will join in. Donations for the festival can be brought in to school on Friday 23rd September. Eastbourne Foodbank will be grateful for any donations. Please donate what you can, if you are able to.

Our Meet and Greet afternoon takes place on Tuesday 27th September, and is an opportunity for you to see your child's classroom and meet their teacher. I hope you will be able to join us. Further details can be found in the Bulletin.

I'm looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Tuesday 20th September.

    With my best wishes,

  • HRH Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022)

    Fri 09 Sep 2022

    HRH QUEEN ELIZABETH II (1926 – 2022)

Everyone at Oakwood Primary Academy would like to pay their deepest respects and condolences to the Royal Family, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, yesterday. The Queen meant so much to so many people, and our pupils, parents and staff have been deeply affected by the sad news. Her reign, the longest for any serving British Monarch, is one to celebrate, and we have helped our pupils, today, to remember her incredible duty and service to the United Kingdom and to the commonwealth, and to remember the wonderful woman that she was.

We will, of course, respect this period of National Mourning, and this will mean that we will limit the amount of posts that we share. The school will remain open during this time.
