  • Deputy Headteacher Update - Friday 25th November 2022

    Fri 25 Nov 2022

    Welcome to this week’s update.

Children from Years 1 to 6 had an exciting opportunity on Monday. M&M Productions came into school and performed the pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. The children enjoyed this amazing experience: there was lots of laughing, applause and cheering. This was something that I am sure, many of our children will remember for years to come.

This week, Year 2 have been learning about the properties of shapes including vertices and sides. Children in Year 5 have been focused on writing some fantastic ‘Warning Stories’ using a variety of different writing skills. I have been impressed with how well the children can explain their stories to make the reader become hooked and make them want to read on.

In Year 6 this week, pupils have been investigating the features on Google Slides to create their own presentations. They will be using these skills to create their own Online Safety presentations, which they can then share with our younger children in school.

All our children from Nursery to Year 6 have begun to prepare and rehearse for their Christmas Shows and Carol Concerts and the singing so far has been amazing! This could be the best singing I have heard at Oakwood yet! We really hope that you will be able to join us in this experience later in the term.

See our photographs in the slideshow to see our learning from this week!

Well done to Matilda, Sophie and Macy from Year 6 who took part in a gymnastic competition in Uckfield last weekend. The all did themselves proud and today Matilda shared her trophy for 3rd place with the rest of the school during our celebration assembly.  Do we have future Olympic stars in the making?

Next week, Jessica Fleischer, an English Kickboxing Champion, will be joining us on Tuesday 29th November as part of Sports for Schools. Children have already taken home sponsorship forms and during the day, they (alongside ALL the adults) will be completing four different challenges: Spotty Dogs, Leg Drives, Push-ups and Star Jumps. Children in KS1 and KS2 can come into school in their P.E. kits that day.

On Thursday 1st December, the Oakwood Christmas Post will commence. The post box will be located in the school office and our Year 6 Ambassadors will help to sort and deliver any cards or letters back to the classes. Thank you to Mr Trigwell who has made a brilliant new post box for the school.

We hope that you are all enjoying the football - whomever you are following. Many classes have been discussing the World Cup and the determination that some of the players have shown to get a result for their nation!

Have a great weekend (and come on England tonight!)

  • Oakwood Primary Academy - Ofsted Inspection Report

    Fri 18 Nov 2022

    Dear Parents and Carers,

As you will be aware, Ofsted inspected Oakwood Primary Academy on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th October 2022. I am delighted to share the outcome of this inspection and to inform you that the school has been judged to be ‘Good’ in all areas, with an overall judgement of ‘Good’. This is an incredible outcome for the school and is testament to all of our fantastic pupils and the hard work of the whole staff team.

You can read a copy of the report of by following this link:

    https://www.oakwoodprimaryacademy.org/ofsted-report/

During the inspection, the inspectors made reference to the brilliant attitudes of pupils. In the report, the lead inspector, HMI Shazia Akram, said, ‘Pupils are kind, compassionate and considerate to everyone. They are eager to play a part in making their friendly school a welcoming place’. During visits to lessons, the inspection teams saw pupils enjoying learning and classrooms ‘abuzz with lively discussions.’

I am particularly pleased that Ofsted recognised the significant work that has taken place to improve the curriculum, across all subjects during these past two years, which was described as ‘innovative’ and ‘well-structured’. The inspection team rightly identified how reading was a priority and that ‘pupils talk excitedly about the books that they are reading’. The quality of SEND provision was highlighted, with the inspectors noting that pupils with additional needs receive a good quality of education.

Ms Akram went on to add that, ‘The school is moving from strength to strength’ and that pupils ‘value diversity’ and ‘celebrate difference’. One pupil in Year 6 said, ‘‘We treat everyone as an equal. It does not matter to us what religion, sexuality, race, hair colour or type of glasses they wear’.

I know that the school being placed into special measures, with an Inadequate judgement in March 2020, was incredibly difficult for the entire school community. This report reflects the hard work, dedication and commitment of all the staff to improve standards and outcomes for all of our pupils.

Please take the time to read the inspection report, as it represents a school that is not only Good, but one that is determined to be the very best.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of the school.

    With my very best wishes,

    Ryan Laker

  • Headteacher Update - Friday 4th November 2022

    Fri 04 Nov 2022

Welcome to this week's Headteacher Update!

I hope you all had a great half term. It's been brilliant to welcome children back to school this week. It has been a settled start to Term 2. The children have been introduced to their new learning journeys and units of learning this week, and are excited about the learning to come.

Children in Reception have been developing their confidence, and jumping from the high apparatus. There was lots of lovely encouragement and support from their friends. They are working together and helping each other with their learning, including their letter formation and experimenting with the cars down the ramp.

In Year 4, the children have been learning about 'classification' as part of their Science lessons, exploring the many ways that animals and living organisms can be grouped. There were some really interesting discussions about the different groups and the children had to really think about how to sort their animals.

Our School Council representatives met today to talk to Mr Paramor about some ideas for the school. They discussed their ideas about the playground, how to improve the school grounds and created an action plan for this year. We'll update you with their progress across the year.

See our photographs in the slideshow to see our learning from this week!

This week, we held our Open Evening for prospective parents, who have a child starting Reception in September 2023. It was lovely to see so many parents visit. The school looked brilliant, with fantastic learning on display. I'd like to say 'Thank you' to our Year 6 Ambassadors who provided tours of the school. Visitors commented on how polite, confident and enthusiastic they were, and how much they loved their school. They got a very special mention in assembly today.

Tours of the school will continue throughout November, so if you know of any friends or family who will have a child who is 4 and starting school next year, please let them know. Bookings can be made by contacting the School Office.

In today's Celebration Assembly, we awarded this term's first set of certificate winners. Well done to them all. The list of 'Stars of the Week' can be found on this week's Bulletin (Number 7). We also announced our Champions for the Term 1 Attendance Challenge. Well done to Year 3 Turing Class and Year 5 Hamilton Class, who had the highest overall attendance last term, and have won a £20 voucher for their classes. We'll find out whether there will be new Attendance Champions in Term 2.

Congratulations to Louis H. who is this year's first Word Millionaire. Since September, Louis has read a total of 1,000,000 words - Well done to Louis! His certificate will be displayed in the school library and we'll look forward to seeing who else will join him in the 'Hall of Fame'.

The travelling Book Fair from Scholastic will be arriving at school next Tuesday. There are some fantastic deals on a range of books and gifts, just in time for Christmas. The fair will take place in the Infant Hall, each afternoon from the 8th-15th November, starting at 3.20pm.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to school for next week's Parents Evening, and a chance for you to meet with your child's class teacher. These are taking place on Tuesday 8th November (from 3.30pm) and Thursday 10th November (from 4.30pm), giving you some flexibility to choose a time that works for you.

Just a reminder to parents that the school is closed to pupils on Friday 11th November 2022 (next Friday), due to an INSET Day.

Please see this week's Bulletin, with further information and key dates.

I hope you enjoy any firework and bonfire celebrations that you might be attending this weekend. I'll look forward to seeing all of the pupils on Monday!

    With my very best wishes,
