  • Headteacher Update - Friday 9th December 2022

    Fri 09 Dec 2022

Welcome to this week's Weekly Update!

I'm not sure how, but next week is the last school week of this term and of this calendar year. We have really enjoyed celebrating the run-in to the end of 2022 in school, and our festive events and celebrations in school have been truly incredible and inspirational.

Our week kicked-off with our lovely Nursery children who sang some Christmas rhymes and songs, in front of parents on the big stage in the hall. There were big smiles on their faces and I know that the parents who came along enjoyed it too.

Our pupils in Years 3 and 4, and Years 5 and 6, put on four, spine-tingling performances at St. Mary's Church in Willingdon this week. Our afternoon performances were very well attended but it was brilliant to perform in the church across some very wintry and evenings...the children definitely brought the spirit of Christmas to us all!

I am immensely proud of all the children who have performed so far and it has felt truly special to have been able to share these inspiring performances with you. I hope you have enjoyed coming to see your child perform. Next week, our children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are performing their Christmas play - 'Christmas Donkey For Sale'. We're really looking forward to that!

On Thursday, Mrs Wood and Miss Mundy took a group of children in Years and 4 to the community centre to complete a community litter-pick. The children were incredibly well behaved and helped collect several large bags of rubbish, and clear some of the areas we all share.

Well done to all of our certificate winners this week. Our full list of 'Stars of the Week' can be found on this week's Bulletin. As always, there is lots of information about school events next week, so please take the time to read this.

Ahead to next week, on Monday we have our annual 'Reindeer Walk'. It's a great event. We're looking forward to seeing 300 reindeer - we're expecting it to be cold, so please ensure your child has their coat, scarves and gloves.

Our Christmas Lunch is being served on Thursday - this is also the last day of term. The usual favourites of roast turkey, and all the trimmings are on the menu. Children are invited to wear a Christmas jumper if they would like to. We will also be finding out who this term's 'Stars of the Term' are. We are all looking forward to next week, and the fun and festivities. We also know that the routines are different and for some children this can be hard...so we'll do our best to keep as many things as normal as possible.

Enjoy the football if you are watching this weekend, and I will look forward to seeing all of the pupils on Monday.

    Have a good weekend.

  • Headteacher Update - Friday 2nd December 2022

    Fri 02 Dec 2022

Welcome to this week's Weekly Update!

It's been a brilliant week at Oakwood! We started the week with a visit from professional athlete, Jessica Fleischer, English Kickboxing Champion. We found out all about her career, her journey towards becoming so successful and the barriers and obstacles she had to overcome. The children were definitely inspired and some are already asking about attending a kickboxing club for themselves. Thank you for all of your sponsorships so far. Forms are due in to school by Tuesday 6th December.

Our children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 took part in a West End Drama workshop this week. Some children took part in a Story Explorer session, visiting Victorian London at Christmas, whilst others returned to Ancient Greece. It was a great way to further enhance our History curriculum.

In Year 2, we've been exploring materials, and which ones would make the best bed for a pet. The children have been testing their properties, including absorbency, and enjoyed their scientific learning this week.

I always enjoy celebrating the children's individual achievements and successes. The latest Stars of the Week were awarded in today's 'Celebration Assembly'. This week's winners are:

    Reception - Roscoe P.

    Year 1 - Emily O.

    Year 2 - Grace S.

    Year 3 - Millie-Rose P. and Rogue J-G.

    Year 4 - Emma F. and Auraya P-S.

    Year 5 - Stanley S. and Cienna E.

    Year 6 - Louis H. and Amelia A-S.

Well done to all of this week's winners! In our Attendance Raffle, the number 6 was drawn at random. Well done to Angie B. in Year 4, and all of the children with 100% attendance.

Next week, our festive performances will begin. Our Nursery children will be performing in the main hall on Tuesday 6th December (9.30am). This year's Christmas Carols are being held at St. Mary's Church in Willingdon (with audiences this time):

    Year 3 and 4 - Wednesday 7th December (1.30pm / 6.00pm)

    Year 5 and 6 - Thursday 8th December (1.30pm / 6.00pm)

I hope you will be able to join us for one of the performances. We look forward to seeing you. Please see the Bulletin for all of the details for the upcoming performances.

We have taken delivery of a new recycling bank on the school grounds. If you have any used or unwanted clothes, please feel free to use the recycling bank. Our School Council representatives are pictured with the new recycling bank.

I hope you all have a brilliant weekend!
